Happened about 2.15am and was felt as far away as Aberdeen, Belfast, Chatham - if
all reports can be associated with this event.. |

Damage at Egremont included chimneys being thrown down, and the collapse of part of
the castle; a chimney came down in Tangier Street, Whitehaven, and people were thrown
off their feet; the quay at Workington was damaged; some thousands of tons of rock
came off Pillar; there was a landside on Red Pike, which revealed a deposit of iron
ore; there were falls of rock on Helvellyn; stone walls and slates were thrown down
in Bootle; a house at Barrow-in-Furness split from top to bottom; old walls fell down
on Penrith, Appleby and Brough; people awoke and furniture was shaken in Gilsland;
there was alarm in Cark and Cartmel. |
