The epicentre of an earthquake, December 1979, 5 on the Richter scale, was near here. A later shock occured a week later.

Variously known as the Longtown Earthquake, the Gretna Earthquake, the Boxing Day Earthquake, ... Explained by some as the effects of over indulgence on Christmas Day! Damage was varied: falling chimneys and chimney stacks, roof slates displaced, wall plaster cracked, etc. There was a long series of after shocks into January 1980. An epicentre near Longtown?
