Three ancient bells have been preserved in All Saints' Church, Orton, instead of being recast as part of the present ring of eight. They were 3rd, 4th and 5th in the old ring, and are displayed hung in a timber frame as they would be in the tower.
3rd. Dated 1637, inscribed:-
probably made by William Oldfield, of York and Doncaster, Yorkshire.
5th. Dated 1637, initials CP and IC, which may be John Conyers, inscribed:-
probably made by William Oldfield, of York and Doncaster, Yorkshire.
4th Cast by John Woolley, bellfounder, 21 Henry VIII, which is 1530, as part of a ring of four. Inscribed in gothic caps:-
There is also a shield shape badge with a greek cross on a saltire, with initials L.B. and perhaps smaller initials. John Woolley was a servant in the foundry of Richard Seliok, Long Row, Nottingham, up to 1524. He was a bell founder in his own right in the 1530s, retiring 1539-40; bells made by him are not common. He was at one time involved in a court case with his former employer over a bell at Grantham.

hearsay The first stone building was erected in the 13th century; the tower and north aisle were added about 1504; chancel rebuilt, and other repairs, by Paley and Austin, 1878. In the victorian restoration the existing lime wash was removed from the church tower, and ever since, it leaked, causing structural damage. The lime wash has been restored, about 2006, and now the church seems to be weathertight again.
