Lizzy Baty was born at Castle Douglas, about 1729. She eloped with John Baty, local
schoolmaster, climbing down a ladder from her bedroom window on a snowy night. They
settled on Bewcastle Fell and made a living by fortune telling. |

| She was known as the Brampton Witch, died age 88 at Bleach House (now Low Beckside),
Brampton, 1817. |
