hearsay:-
A horse and gravity powered wooden wagonway served the Earl of Carlisle's Naworth Colliery, Nether Denton, to Brampton, Cumbria, from 1799.
The track was laid with iron rails, 4 feet 8 inches gauge, 1809; the line was renewed about 1836. Steam locomotives hired from the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway were used from 15 July 1836 though horses continued working to 1881; Rocket worked here 1837-40. This railway carried the first passengers by steam in Cumbria. The line was leased to the North Eastern Railway from 29 October 1912. It closed during World War I, from 1917 to 1920; then closed to passengers 29 October 1923. The goods service continued under the National Coal Board to March 1953.
Rocket ended its working life here and was given by the Thompson Family to the Science Museum.
