hearsay:-
The company began as a mine in 1906, the land leased from Lowther Estates by John and David McGhie. The gypsum was sent to their plaster of paris works in Rutherglen. They soon opened a plaster mill locally. The factory today is the largest plasterboard works in the world, owned by British Gypsum Ltd.
Gypsum is calcium sulphate dihydrate, CaSO4.2H2O.
