civil parish:-   Sedbergh (formerly Yorkshire)
county:-   Cumbria
locality type:-   river
1Km square:-   SD6691

hearsay:-
A local resident, of middle age, told us that there used to be a large rock in the river bed just upstream of the bridge in the village street. Villagers would leave food on the stone, and a jar of vinegar. TB patients, living in an old barn up the fell would come down at night, take the food, and put their pennies to pay for it in the jar of vinegar, which would disinfect the coins.
