Canal proposed, 1795, to join Newcastle, Northumberland to Carlisle and Maryport, Cumberland, with a possible branch to Ullswater. Never started - crossing the Pennines would have needed a hundred locks or more! Proposed by William Chapman. A report was published by the Northumberland Committe of Subscribers to the Survey.
A further proposal was the subject of a discussion between Lord Musgrave, Colonel Mowbray and the Duke of York, in 1802, involving John Bell, a land surveyor.
