Edward Troughton was born at Welcome Nook, Corney, 1753; colour blind and deaf from birth. He became a well known scientific instrument maker, sextants, telescopes, barometers, etc. A sundial by him was in this garden. He invented a new way of graduating arcs of circles. Some of his instruments are in the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, where there is a sculpture of him by Sir Francis Chenty. Edward Troughton was awarded the Copley Medal by the Royal Society. He died 1835, age 82; buried in Kensal Cemetery, London.
