"Parish Church, C14 with later additions and alterations; restored 1881. Random rubble. Graduated slate roof with stone ridge; gabled bellcote at west end, apex cross at east. Single storey, 4 bays. Gabled south porch has plank inner door with pointed head. Windows mainly C19 stone-mullioned replacements; original cusped 3-light east window was once pointed. Interior: Font at west end has octagonal C14 (?-Pevsner suggests mid C17) bowl on later stem; panel with low-relief carving (reminiscent of window tracery) to each face. Board on south wall, dated 1798, lists benefactors; rest of fittings are C19/C20, including glass by A. Sewell & Co. and Gibbs &Co., both of London."

'... little is known of the history of St. Catherine's Church, Eskdale'. William de Meschines founded the Priory of St Bees, 1125, and four chapels were founded about this time, one of them in Eskdale. This just may have been near St Catherine's Well a quarter of a mile from here.

In response to a petition to the Pope, the Abbot of Calder Abbey was instructed to promote the chapel to a parish church in 1445.

The building appears to date to the 14th century. There may have been repairs in the 17th century; the ceiling was repaired in 1831; there was major restoration, rebuilding, in 1881.
