Page 157:-  "[Dalton] ... Romney, the portrait-painter, was born at a place called Beckside, in Dalton. ..."

hearsay:-  
George Romney was born here. He worked as a joiner with his father but was then apprenticed to a portait painter in Kendal, Christopher Steel. He left for London iin 1762, not returning to his wife and children till 1799. Died 1802.
