| State Managed Pubs |

| During World War I, in 1916, the goverment attempted to curb excessive drinking by
nationalising the pubs in Carlisle. Many pubs were closed; the rest were run by civil
servants. Drinking time was restricted; the beer was watered. |
||
| An important reason was to reduce the drinking of workers from the explosives factories
to the north of the town. The wild behaviour of female munitions workers had scandalized
Carlisle (at least, the respectable part). And the government was worried about irish
labourers, as nationalism increased, drinking to wards rioting. |
||
| The aim was 'saner, cleaner, soberer but at the same time merrier inns'. |
||
| The main architect for changes was Harry Redfern, assisted by George Walton and Jospeh
Seddon. |
||
| The scheme lasted till 1973. |
