It is said: that before there was any bridge at Newby Bridge there was a ford in this part of the river; the river being only 2 or 3 feet deep, normally. But there was a deep in the middle, called the Dog Hole. A tinker crossing the ford stepped into the hole, and was found standing up, drowned.
