"Sea lock and wharf. 1819-1823 for the Carlisle Canal. Red sandstone ashlar with V-joints, large granite blocks on seaward corner. Standard lock design with recesses for 2 pairs of lock gates, now missing, to take vessels of up to 100 tons: gave access from harbours to canal basin. Wall of lock to east continues at right angles to form a wharf. In use until 1853 when the canal was drained and part of the bed of the canal was used for the Port Carlisle Railway."
