Built in 1563.
John Wilkinson, iron master, lived here. The first iron boat was sailed by him ono the River Winster; he made iron pipes for the water works in Paris; he made canon used by Wellington.
Beatrix Potter was a visitor here and met a friendly porker in the piggery who became Pigling Bland. The piggery was where the library now stands, in Pig Lane.
