page 140:-  "Lowfield Hush Mine affords an excellent example of a mode of searching for ore deposits that has been much used about Alston, and in the adjacent mining fields. In the process of "Hushing," a trench was made down the face of a mountain slope, and a dam constructed at its head. A water-course supplied the dam from some convenient rivulet, and when a sufficient quantity had been stored, it was turned into the trench in a good volume, while men supplied with tools were posted at intervals along the brink to assist the work of denudation. By these means the trench was speedily worn down to the rock, and rich deposits of ore were often found. At Lowfield Hush, the trench was made along the back of the vein, and the surface cover was scooped out to the rock, laying bare large deposits of sulphate of barytes, and a considerable quantity of galena. These deposits have been worked to some extent, and the open excavation is like a large railway cutting."
