The cross was erected by Canon Rawnsley as a memorial to two shepherds; Edward Hawell
1815-1889, and his son John 1854-1891. They bred Herdwick sheep. The memorial verses
come from Rawnsley's poem the Great Shepherd:- |

| "Great Shepherd of Thy heavenly flock, These men have left our hill Their feet were on the living rock, Oh guide and bless them, still." |
