| This is the original memorial, on display at the Armitt Library. It has been re-cast
and the new memorial put back on Great Gable. |

An area of fells, including Great Gable, was bought by the Fell and Rock Climbing
Club, 1923; presented to the nation as a war memorial after World War I. A bronze
tablet on the summit commemorates this, unveiled Whit Sunday, 1924. |
