The first Sunday after Ascension was Shaking Bottle Sunday, or Sugar Water Sunday.
This was a celebration of Spring. The well was decorated with flowers and people drank
the water mixed with sugar. The Bishop of Penrith banned the celebrations when it
began to include cock fighting and wrestling, 1824. |
