Boarded door and casement to ground floor; external stone staircase to boarded door on first floor; 3 windows. Interior has complete wheel and machinery still in use for grinding snuff." |

There was a mill here in the 13th century. The great weir now across the river is
said to have been built about 1800 by Messrs Webster and Holmes to power a marble
works. |

| "The late Mr. Webster, Architect, constructed machinery on the River Kent for sawing
and polishing marble. The surrounding mountainous district supplies the finest black,
and other marble, and the advantage possessed by Kendal of sea and inland navigation
facilitates the importation of Italian marble to be here manufactured and re-shipped
to most of the principal towns in the kingdom. ..." |

| The mill was taken over in 1895 by Messrs Chaplow for an engineering works; the upper
mill being used since 1887 by Gawith, Hoggarth and Co for snuff. |
