hearsay:-	Jacob Thompson, eldest son of Merrick Thompson, was born on Langton Street, 1806. His father, a Quaker, was a factory owner who had built Factory Yard, Friargate. Jacob became an artist, exhibiting at Carlisle Academy of Art, and from 1831 at the Royal Academy and the British Institution, London. After living in the south 1834-41, he returned to live at The Hermitage, Hackthorpe, on the estate of Lord Lonsdale. He died there, 1879, and is buried in the churchyard at Lowther.
