"1869. Large and dignified Gothic mansion in splendid position, in fine grounds on hill overlooking the Lake. Gables, octagonal chimneys, 2 storeys, local slate, with stone-mullioned windows with pointed or Tudor-arched lights, some cusped, some bay windows. Tudor-arched entrance in gabled porch, with ogee niche containing the date. Long, low proportions."

notes:-  
Thomas H Mawson was commissioned to build greenhouses etc, at Holehird House, 1854, for William Grimble Groves, brewer. Nothing remains except a walled garden.

The house was bought by W G Groves in 1897. He brought his gardener, Edward Robertshaw, from Alderley Edge, and commissioned greenhouses from Thomas H Mawson. W G Groves was a sponsor of Reginald Farrer and William Purdom who went to north west China hunting for plants.
