Row of 3 storeyed properties, the ground floor mostly occupied by shops of late Victorian and Edwardian date. Stone, stuccoed and cemented, quoins, slate roofs, No 16 with a balustraded parapet. Ship Inn (No 14) has a pretty dentilled cornice over 1st floor and also at the eaves level. The rest have sash windows, mostly in moulded stone frames. Premises occupied by Castle Studois (perhaps No 22) said to possess good staircase. | ||
All the listed buildings in Market Place form a group with Kirkgate Corner, St Helens Street. Nos 14 to 28 (even) and Nos 30 and 30A together with Nos 2 to 10 (even) and Nos 1 to 13 (odd) Castlegate form a group. | ||
