"THIS Cave is situated about two miles east of Sedbergh, between the roads leading to Kirkby Stephen and Hawes: a small mountain-stream suddenly buries itself in the cave, as seen in the view, and, after running"

page 4:-   "about seventy yards under ground, emerges through a nearly perpendicular face of marble rock. In a dry season the cave may be passed through without any great difficulty. About the middle of the interior a glimpse of light may be seen from above; and a stone thrown from the outside into a hole overgrown with coppice-wood may be heard when it falls into the water in the cave. The stream continues its course through a narrow gully, and falls into the Garsdale river, which joins the Rather, or Rothey, about a mile below."
