Most of the caves and potholes included in the Old Cumbria Gazetteer are in North Yorkshire, the area of Ingleborough, Whernside etc adjacent to Cumbria, where the limestone is. The excuse for their inclusion is that a trip to see the caves was included by Thomas West and other early writers as part of their guides to the Lakes. Some caves are open to visitors; otherwise, keep out, they're dangerous.
