The Religious Society of Friends
In the middle part of the 17th century, George Fox led a group of Christians in the north of England who were critical of the established church, its hierarchical structure, and elaborate forms of worship. From this grew The Religious Society of Friends, The Quakers.

Quakers met in private homes, shunning 'steeple houses', till the first northern meeting house was built at Brigflatts, 1675.

Quakers could not use the churchyards attached to the anglican church, so needed a place to bury their dead. Raising headstones was sanctioned in 1850; of a uniform size and shape.
