bee boles, Cumbria
county:-   Cumbria
Little Aumbreys
Bees used to be kept in a bee skep, made of straw. To protect the bee skeps from rain they were put in a recess in a stone wall, like an aumbrey or little cupboard without a door, called a bee bole. Most of the surviving bee boles in Westmorland and Cumberland were built in the 17th or 18th centuries. They are usually in the wall of a garden or orchard, near a house.

There are many bee boles in Cumbria. Townsley, Ian: 1999: has a comprehensive list.
Only a few are visible from a public road or path.
