| As well as serving to call worshippers to prayer, or celebrate weddings and other
events, a church bell might also struck by a clock mechanism to announce the time. |

| Most churches have a bell, or more. Small churches have just one or two in a bell
cote on a gable. Large churches might have 6, 8, or even more in a ring of bells in
a tower, where change ringing is possible. Some of the bells are old, dating from
the 15th century or earlier. Others are new, though recast bells might include the
metal from an earlier set of bells, which might have been recast from earlier bells,
and so on. |
