Look up not just to the wonderful hills but also to the variety of chimney pots around
you. Think about the practicalities too. The slate tent is an attractive local feature,
but a nuisance when you have to sweep the chimney and fear to push the brush too far,
also difficult to protect against jackdaws nesting. Fancy patent pots are there to
improve the drawing of the fire, especially in windy weather. A wire jackdaw guard
also spoils the fun of seeing the sweep's brush waving out of the chimney pot.

Sometimes a low chimney, almost on a level with the roof, is overlaid with a slate,
supported upon four slender pillars, to prevent the wind from driving the smoke down

roof; which low square is often surmounted by a tall cylinder, giving to the cottage
