Where's the Water? |
Hydrant plates are the yellow signs at the road side which tell a fireman where to
look for a fire hydrant, a source of water for fire fighting. |

The first mention of these is in an Act of 1708; a mark had to be fixed on |
"the front of an house over against the place where the stopcock lies ..." |
Later acts repeat the necessity, for example, in 1875:- |
"... shall paint of mark the building and walls within the street with words or marks
near to such fire plugs to denote the situation thereof ..." |
The style of hydrant plates was standardised about 1938; and now conform to a British
Standard. Many old style plates, often cast iron can be spotted in the streets today. |
