| We have been quite choosy about what inns/pubs/hotels and innsigns we photograph and
record in Westmorland and Cumberland etc. If the innsign is just words we tend not
to bother. This might be unfair, but it's practical when there is so much to do! Innsigns
painted by a signwriter are an asset to the everyday scene; innsign by graphic designers
leave much to be desired; innsigns with text alone are mostly boring. |

| Innsigns hang out in the weather, and deteriorate under the action of sunshine and
rain. We're sorry that some of the signs illustrated are not in the best condition;
but that's how we found them; and they are better recorded than not, they are dying
away. |
