W H Pyne's Microcosm, 1808:- |
||||
"Lime is an article of great consideration not only from its utility for various purposes,
but from the employment which the manufactury of it affords to thousands. From the
quantity used in building houses, walls, plastering, &c. it forms an important item
in the national expenditure. The consumption of it has also of late greatly increased
by its successful application to agricultural purposes, by our improving farmers." |

|
||||
A fairly careful search for old limekilns has been made on OS 6 inch maps of the 1970s,
you have to look for 'Lime Kiln', 'LK', and 'kiln' which is usually a limekiln. The
interesting series of limekilns on the Coniston Limestone Series were also sought
on the OS County series maps of the 1890s; these do not all show up on later OS maps. |
