The great abbeys, monasteries etc, were made away with by Henry VIII: The Dissolution. Some were granted to private persons who made great houses out of them. Some went to ruin, perhaps keeping a part in use as a parochial church.

Monks of a reformed order of the Benedictines; arrived in England about 1078.

Dominican Order
Mendicant friars known as the Black Friars or Order of Preachers; arrived in England about 1221.
Franciscan Order

Canons and nuns, and lay canons or sisters; arrived in England about 1131.
