Measuring the Weather
There are a number of 'official' weather stations used by the Meteorological Office scattered about Cumbria. Some are complex sites of measuring instruments, usually mounted on a mast, and presumably reporting to the Met Office automatically. Others might be as simple as a rain gauge, a proper pattern, kept and monitored by a private resident who reports in; the equipment checked by the Met Office.

From the point of view of one locality we have noticed that our rainfall, measured with an integrated sensor suite using a tipping cup mechanism, is higher than an 'official' gauge 2 miles south in the same valley, which is higher than a private measure made 3 miles south again at the foot of the valley. 2011, for example, the figures were 129, 100 and 82 inches respectively; and 2012 was wetter.
We trust that the Met Office know about the variation in small distances in a mountainous area! We assume that the spread of official stations enables the reasoned assessment of a local value for each measured variable.
