The rectory has the remains of a pele tower built 14th century. Lady Anne Clifford was given shelter at the rectory from a storm, in thanks she gave the rector a door lock - this is now in the church.
At Marble Mill, by the beck, the local limestone was polished into marble.

George Steadman lived here, 1846-1904. He retired from Cumberland Wrestling in 1900, age 54, having won the Grasmere championships 17 times.
