hearsay:-
St John Boste was born here 1543, educated at Appleby Grammar School, took Anglican Orders at Queen's College, Oxford, and became head master of his old school. He later entered into Catholics Orders at Douai, France, and came back to England to preach with the illegal English Mission. He was eventually imprisoned in the Tower of London, and then hung, drawn and quartered at Durham, 1594, for which he was canonised in 1970.
